The Hurricanes Basketball Association (HBA) is a non-profit organization, which started out of the Malvern Community Centre and later expanded throughout the East Scarborough region. HBA or simply known as Hurricanes was sanctioned by the Ontario Basketball Association.
Since it was founded in 1996, from a vision of including sports and creating a supportive family within our community, this club has offered children of all ages a fun and safe place to play and grow. We have coached or mentored over 1800 members over our 12 year history. Some of our successes include scholarships and several Provincial Championship Gold Medals.
The members of the club were given the opportunity to enjoy the challenge of basketball, the physical activity, friendship, camaraderie and the sheer fun of playing this wonderful sport. Many have graduated from our program and moved on to play basketball for the national team or NCAA teams. Many others have successful careers in and out of the sports arena.
The coaches and support staff, who were all volunteers, made their services accessible to as many children as possible, and were committed to developing and maintaining a highly competitive Rep program while managing to keep cost minimal. The club expanded their services to include tutoring, a skipping and dancing group and a chess club in 2000, but unfortunately lack of volunteer support and cost forced us to discontinue those components in 2005.
In recent years we’ve seen the evolution of basketball and as such greater need for quality programming like ours became necessary. We reevaluated our program and decided the best way to fulfill that need is to join forces with another basketball program that shares our passion for the sport as well as our vision for delivering a quality program without exuberant cost.
Therefore as president of the Hurricanes Basketball Association I would like to announce that the Hurricanes family has formally merged our program with the “North York Fire” family to become “FIRE BASKETBALL”
We will continue to have a strong presence in the Malvern and east Scarborough region and the North York area. Please continue to support our now stronger family as we move forward.
